AutoPipette
Aim
This project explores semi-automated liquid handling, addressing the fatigue and inconsistency caused by repetitive manual pipetting. The aim was to design a handheld device that reduces reliance on manual technique through motorised actuation and real-time guidance, while keeping the familiar feel of a standard pipette.
Solution
AutoPipette is a semi-automated handheld pipette combining motorised plunger actuation with real-time orientation guidance, closing the gap between manual pipettes and full lab automation at a fraction of the cost.

The Process
We moved through research, control systems, mechanical engineering and compliance in parallel, each phase informing the next.
Research
Fatigue problems were identified via teardown and morphological analysis of existing pipettes, converging on lead-screw actuation and a familiar handheld form.
Electromechanics
Force and volume calculations validated the lead-screw drive; iterative seal design solved airtightness, and a custom PCB consolidated control and sensing.
Systems & Control
A complementary filter and finite state machine delivered stable, reliable feedback, verified via breadboard testing before PCB integration.
DFMA & Market
DFMA and tolerancing shaped a production-ready design; CE/UKCA/ISO 8655 compliance and branding completed the path to market.
